Doing Good (December 2008)  E-mail

"The act of doing good in this world, friends, will give you the purest and sweetest delights. It will gladden your heart, which will not be disturbed either by regret or indifference. If only you could understand something of the grandeur and gentleness that mark the generosity of beautiful souls intent on doing good! Theirs is a feeling that causes them to look at the person in need as their equal, and makes them willing even to offer their own clothes if necessary to help a fellow human being. If only you could have as your single occupation making other people happy! No worldly pleasure can ever compare to the joy of serving as an instrument of God in bringing aid and hope to families that have known only bitterness and want. It cannot compare to witnessing a downcast face suddenly glow with hope because there is now bread on the table and because a tearful child, still too young to understand the harshness of life, will no longer cry, saying "I'm hungry!" These words no longer tear into parental hearts like daggers. Oh! If you could only imagine how delightful it can be to see happiness spring back where there was nothing but desperation just a while ago. Be aware of your responsibility toward your fellow human beings. Go face the material misfortunes, but battle also the hidden miseries of the soul that are the most painful of all. Dearly beloved brethren, go, remembering these words of our Savior: "Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me." Compassionate love, charity: mighty words that sum up all the virtues. You have the task of leading the peoples of earth toward happiness. When they embrace you they will start preparing for themselves a future of joy, and you will become their solace during their journey on earth. Through you they will enjoy a foretaste of the joys reserved for them in the heart of God. Love - celestial virtue - you gave me the only true moments of joy during my earthly journey. Beloved friends, sojourners on earth, I hope that my words reach your souls, and that you trust this advice: "It is in love for others alone that you will find peace of heart, contentment for the soul, and the balm for life's sorrows. Remember that, whenever you're on the point of blaming God, you must cast your eyes around and make an effort to see all the miseries waiting to be relieved - the children without families, the old who don't have a friendly hand to clasp when death visits. There is so much good waiting to be done! Beloved, don't complain. On the contrary, give thanks to God, and lavish compassion, understanding, and aid on anyone who suffers alone. You will reap sweet rewards on earth, and later: Only God can fully describe the blissfulness that awaits you beyond this life! "
