NEW PROGRAM FOR THURSDAY NIGHT MEETINGS
We are happy to announce a new program for our Thursday night meetings beginning August 5, 2010, from 8:00 PM to 9:15PM: INTRODUCTION TO SPIRITISM, a course coordinated by Luis Almeida. At the end of each class (approximately 1 hour, including Q&A), there will be a short reading of The Gospel According to Spiritism, followed by passes.
Materials for the course were prepared and are distributed by the United States Spiritist Council; the first module is divided in 12 topics (see list below), organized in a PowerPoint presentation. The course will be conducted in English.
CHANGE IN MONTHLY SCHEDULE: The first three Thursdays of the month are now reserved for the course, while the last Thursdays are set aside for lectures, presenting diverse topics not necessarily related with the course in progress.

Functional MRI Detects Residual Awareness in Vegetative Patients |

August 17, 2007 — In a follow-up to their earlier single case report, British and Belgian researchers have found several cases of patients in an apparently vegetative state who nevertheless show signs of brain activation on functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), signaling cognitive function and conscious awareness.
With further research, the researchers are hopeful that detecting this type of covert awareness might make it possible to communicate with these patients or predict those who may recover from their vegetative state. However, the authors stress that they don't want to raise false hopes with this work.
"This is really at earliest days, and although we've shown that you can demonstrate conscious awareness in now several patients who are otherwise assumed to be vegetative, this is something that's extremely unlikely to apply to most cases of vegetative state, particularly those who have been in that situation for a long period of time," first author Adrian M. Owen, PhD, from the Medical Research Council Cognition and Brain Sciences Unit, in Cambridge, United Kingdom, told Medscape. "As we know, the chances of recovery from vegetative state decreases dramatically over time."

Scientists spot nearby 'super-Earth' |

(CNN) While the planet probably has too thick of an atmosphere and is too hot to support life similar to that found on Earth, the discovery is being heralded as a major breakthrough in humanity's search for life on other planets.
"The big excitement is that we have found a watery world orbiting a very nearby and very small star," said David Charbonneau, a Harvard professor of astronomy and lead author of an article on the discovery, which appeared this week in the journal Nature.
